by

Brazil recorded 102 deaths from Covid and 14,543 cases of the disease, this Monday (21). The country reached 657,363 lives lost and 29,641,848 people infected with Sars-CoV-2 since the beginning of the pandemic.

The country had a moving average of deaths below 300 per day for the first time since January 23, when the figure was 292. This Monday, the average was 291, down 37% from the data two weeks ago.

The moving average of cases is also down from the two-week average. It is now 37,093 infected people per day, a 23% reduction.

On Sundays, Mondays and holidays the data are usually lower, due to delays in notification at the health secretariats.

The country data, collected up to 8 pm, are the result of collaboration between sheet, UOL, O Estado de S. Paulo, Extra, O Globo and G1 to gather and disclose the numbers related to the new coronavirus pandemic. The information is collected by the consortium of press vehicles daily with the state Health Departments.

Regarding vaccination, Brazil recorded 555,948 doses of vaccines against Covid-19 this Monday. According to data from the state health departments, there were 14,788 first doses. 2,723 single doses and 651,931 booster doses were also recorded.

There were negative records of second doses (-113,494). This was due to negative doses in Acre (-1,174), Bahia (-1,059), EspĂrito Santo (-105,254) and Santa Catarina (-277,356).

Acre also recorded negative first doses and single doses, respectively -1,542 and -68.

Bahia registered -1,053 first doses. And EspĂrito Santo also recorded negative first doses, -106,921.

Finally, Rio Grande do Sul had a negative record of booster doses (-2,705).

In all, 175,080,335 people received at least the first dose of a vaccine against Covid in Brazil — 154,471,050 of them have already received the second dose of the immunizer. Added to the single doses of Janssen’s vaccine against Covid, there are already 159,207,220 people with both doses or with one dose of Janssen vaccine.

Thus, the country already has 81.50% of the population with the 1st dose and 74.11% of Brazilians with both doses or with one dose of the Janssen vaccine.

So far, 73,218,171 people have already taken a booster dose, which represents 34.08% of the Brazilian population.

The consortium also gathers the record of vaccine doses administered to children. The population aged 5 to 11 years partially immunized (with only the first dose of vaccine received) is 49.01%, totaling 10,048,020. In the same age group, 10.30% (2,112,339) received the second dose or the single dose.

There was a decrease in infant dose data because the consortium of press vehicles published incorrect information about childhood vaccination in SĂ£o Paulo. The data were corrected and the number of children aged 5 to 11 vaccinated is now calculated based on the percentages reported by the State Health Department. Incorrect data on second doses administered to children in Tocantins were also published.

Vaccination data against Covid-19 was affected by the hacker attack on the Ministry of Health system, which took place in December, which led to the lack of updates in several states for long periods of time. This Sunday, the information was updated in 24 states.

The consortium of press vehicles recently updated the Brazilian population numbers used to calculate the percentage of people vaccinated in the country. Now, the data used are the IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics) projection for 2022. All numbers are now calculated according to these values, including last year’s. Therefore, the percentages of people vaccinated may differ from the previously published figures.

Even those who received both doses or one dose of the Janssen vaccine should maintain basic care, such as wearing a mask and social distancing, say experts.

The initiative of the consortium of press vehicles occurred in response to the attitudes of the Jair Bolsonaro (PL) government, which threatened to withhold data, delayed newsletters about the disease and took information from the air, with the interruption of the disclosure of the totals of cases and deaths. In addition, the government has released conflicting data.
