One of the Ukrainian negotiators in the talks with Russia and an adviser to President Zelensky, Mikhail Pontoliak, told the BBC that after 26 days of war, there have been some changes in the negotiations.
He said after the latest round of talks that the strong resistance of the Ukrainians has forced Russia to “more adequately assess the reality” of the situation that has developed.
This has contributed to encouraging “some kind of dialogue”.
However, he noted that any decision on a peace agreement would be taken by the leaders of Ukraine and Russia. He made it clear, however, that there was no agreed date for a possible meeting between Presidents Zelensky and Putin.
Although he declined to give details of the talks, he ruled out withdrawals from Kyiv over Ukraine’s territorial integrity or sovereignty.
He also expressed disappointment at the non-blockade of Ukrainian airspace by the West, despite the “humanitarian catastrophe” taking place in Europe.
