Three new domestic cases of West Nile infection were recorded in our country last week, according to the EDYY epidemiological report.

From the beginning of the period 2025 until today, a total of seven domestic cases of western Nile virus in Greece have been diagnosed and investigated, with events from the central nervous system (CNS, encephalitis and/or meningitis). No death has been recorded with a virus infection.

Creations have been recorded and explored in six municipalities in the country, in five regional units, and in particular in the Regional Units: West Attica, West of Athens, Piraeus, Islands and Ilia.

It is considered possible and expected to diagnose further outbreaks this coming period, EDY reports

In the European Union and in countries neighboring, during the period 2025, in addition to our country – cases of infection in Romania and Italy have been recorded – in addition to our country.

Epidemiological surveillance of the disease, the timely application of appropriate integrated mosquito combat programs and the taking of personal protection against mosquitoes are the most appropriate measures to control the disease. In this context, it is necessary to alert health professionals and on the one hand the continued alertness of local and national authorities.

ESO carries out enhanced epidemiological surveillance of the disease, directly investigating the incidents, and is in constant communication and cooperation with the competent national, regional and local authorities, with the aim of applying targeted response and prevention measures timely.

As the epidemiology of the virus is determined by many factors, the virus circulation areas and the possible incidence areas in each transmission period cannot be safely predicted. As a result, the EDY recommends complying with individual mosquito protection measures throughout the territory throughout the mosquito circulation period.
