Huntington’s Disease’s Disease is a rare, hereditary, neurodegenerative genetic disorder that affects muscle coordination and leads to cognitive impairment and dementia.

Now, the disease was successfully treated for the first time, with a new treatment

This is a guy gene therapy granted during subtle, surgery in the brainwhich lasts 12 to 18 hours

Emotionally charged, the research team that worked on the new treatment broke out in tears as it described how the data show that The disease slowed by 75% in patients.

Professor Sarah Tabrizi, director of the University College London’s Huntington Disease Center, described the results as “impressive”.

“Not even in our craziest dreams we would expect a 75%slowdown in clinical development,” he said.

This means that the deterioration of the disease – which one would normally expect in a year – would last four years after treatment, giving patients decades of “good quality of life,” Dr. Tabrizi told the BBC.

The first symptoms of Huntington’s disease tend to occur at the age of 30 or 40 years and are usually fatal within two decades.

Every child a suffered parent has a 50% chance of inheriting the disease.

The treatment is likely to be very expensive.

However, “this is a moment of real hope in a disease that affects people at their peak and destroys their families,” the researchers said.

The innovative treatment

Huntington’s disease is caused by an error in a part of our DNA called Huntingtin gene.

This mutation converts a normal protein that is essential to the brain – called Huntingtin protein – into a “murderer” of neurons.

The purpose of treatment is to permanently reduce the levels of this toxic protein, with a single dose.

The treatment uses innovative genetic medicine that combines gene therapy and “mute” genes.
