From the beginning of the period 2025, until September 24, a total of 87 domestic cases of infection have been diagnosed and investigated by West Nile virus In Greece, of which 70 cases presented events from the central nervous system (CNS, encephalitis and/or meningitis and/or acute loose paralysis) and 17 cases had mild events/no CNS events.

During the last week, four new domestic cases were diagnosed/ reported. There have also been two imported cases of infection, exposed to other foreign countries (one in Serbia and one in Italy), which are not included in further analysis.

In total, during the period 2025, by September 24Seven deaths have been recorded in patients with virus infection and CNS manifestations over 65 years of age.

During the period 2025, until 24/09/2025, there have been recorded and investigated infection by the West Nile virus in Greece in 38 Municipalities of the country, in 21 Regional/ Metropolitan Units, and in particular in the Regional/ Metropolitan Units: West Attica, West Attica, West Attica Athens, Ilia, Achaia, Aitoloakarnania, Evros, Larissa, Karditsa, Trikala, Arta, Pella, Imathia, Thessaloniki, Evia, Corinthia and Messinia. It is considered possible and expected to diagnose further outbreaks in the coming period.

To European Union And in neighboring countries, during the period 2025, until 17/09/2025, there have been – in addition to our country – outbreaks of IM infection in: Albania, Bulgaria, France, Italy, Spain, Hungary, Romania, Serbia, Kosovo and Turkey.

Epidemiological surveillance of the disease, the timely implementation of appropriate integrated mosquito combat programs, and taking personal protection measures from mosquitoes are the most appropriate measures to control the disease, EDY notes.
