New information is coming to light for the 20 -year -old seamen, who lost his life at Blue Star Chios.
The unfortunate young man, who was studying at a private school of engineering, was shipped on the ship on September 15 with the specialty of the machine cleaner.
This service would be useful later to obtain a engineer’s diploma, but his recruitment in this position was completely legal and was not related to an educational process.
It was not a test, but a regular crew member.
According to documents on the ship, he had submitted all the necessary certificates, including a certificate of basic naval education by the Cyprus Ministry of Maritime, issued on October 8, 2024 under the International Convention. His boarding on Blue Star Chios followed a full process of information and familiarity under the supervision of senior officers, including training in the use of water door.
The accident occurred while the 20 -year -old was heading to the engine room to re -work, completing his shift the previous afternoon at 17:00.
The same information says that the waterproofing door of the garage was not automatically functioning, but manually through lever.
The sailor who uses it has complete control of the system, as the door only moves as long as the pressure on the lever lasts. The regulations require the door to open fully before crossing the crew. If one attempts to pass before the opening is complete and at the same time activates the closing mechanism, there is a risk of trapping.
The conditions under which the young man was trapped remain under investigation, while the Coast Guard’s investigation is underway under the supervision of the competent prosecutor.
