People who have been infected by Omicron variant coronavirus, usually have shorter symptoms and are milder than in the Delta, resulting in faster recovery (on average two days earlier) and less likely to be admitted to hospital, large British study Zoe Covid based on patient reports.
The study, led by Professor Tim Spector of King’s College London, which was based on data from about 63,000 people and published in the medical journal The Lancet, according to the British Guardian, shows that those who had Covid -19 due to Omicron, they were about half as likely to have a persistent cough, fever or loss of smell / taste, compared to the Delta variant.
The analysis shows that in the recent period Omicron spread (December 2021-January 2022) Covid-19 symptoms lasted an average of 6.9 days compared to 8.9 days in Delta (June-November 2021), while in the case of Omicron infection the chance of hospitalization was 25% less than in Delta infection (1.9% vs. 2.6%).
Also only 17% of patients with Omicron reported loss of smell compared to 53% of patients with Delta. On the other hand, sore throat is somewhat more common symptom in Omicron (71%) than in the Delta (61%).
