The City of Rio de Janeiro decided to release from this Wednesday (17) the use of masks in gyms. The decree was signed by Mayor Eduardo Paes (PSD) and also makes the use of the item optional in swimming pools, training and fitness centers and skating rinks.
The decree determines that the users of these spaces must prove that they have the vaccination against Covid-19 up to date. Since September, it is necessary to approve proof of immunization to attend this type of place in the city.
The city’s decision comes amid the relaxation of restrictive measures against the pandemic in the city. At the end of October, masks are no longer mandatory in open and uncrowded places in the capital of Rio de Janeiro.
The measure took effect after the Legislative Assembly approved a law that allows the state and municipalities to make the use of masks in open spaces more flexible.
At the time, deputies overturned a state law from June 2020 that required the use of protective equipment in the state.
Days after approval, Governor Claudio Castro (PL) published in the Official Gazette the rules for flexibility, determining that municipalities that have vaccinated 65% of their total population and 75% of their population over 12 years of age have autonomy to decide whether to withdraw whether or not the equipment is mandatory.
In early October, Paes even released a document from the scientific committee that provided for the release of the use of masks in closed places when 75% of the population had the complete vaccination schedule.
Although the city has already reached that mark, the mayor signed a decree last week maintaining the mandatory protection item indoors.
Currently, the capital of Rio de Janeiro observes a drop in the indicators of the pandemic thanks to the advance of vaccination. In Rio, 75.7% of the population has already completed the vaccination schedule, and the occupation of ICU beds is at 47%.
On Monday (15), the last patient admitted by Covid-19 was discharged at Hospital Ronaldo Gazolla, a reference in the treatment of the disease.
According to the city’s epidemiological bulletin, released on Friday (12) , cases of Covid-19 show a downward trend, as well as hospitalizations for the disease. In addition, all 33 administrative regions of the capital are at low risk for the disease.
