Opinion – Cannabis Inc.: UN Headquarters will have a day of debate on Cannabis

by

Next Thursday (5th), the first face-to-face forum on cannabis at the UN (United Nations) headquarters in New York, an address known for debating the most relevant topics for the world’s development. The event is a natural consequence of the leap in the impact of this millennial plant on society – especially during the pandemic, when all dispensaries in the US were considered essential. To give you an idea, in 2021, the sector’s sales increased by 43% compared to the previous year. In Florida, where only medical use is allowed, it rose 70%. Some say that Covid made this market grow ten years in two.

Named Regenerative Cannabis Live, the forum is organized by Patrick McCartan, CEO of Regennabis Ventures, a capital fund company that says it is committed to sustainability, the environment and social innovation practices. Thus, environmental, social and corporate governance (ESG) is a fundamental and common point among the 32 speakers invited for the intense day of discussion. The event starts at 7:00 am and runs until 5:30 pm (New York City).

“The industry of cannabis was born naturally more plural, inclusive and with a strong concern for environmental issues”, says Alex Lucena, partner and head of innovation at The Green Hub, an accelerator for startups in the sector in Brazil. This is because the cultivation of the plant is zero carbon. In the growth process, it stores CO2 in the stalk and eliminates it in the soil, which enriches the soil. In addition, the plant can be used in its entirety, without waste. The flowers are raw material for the medicinal oil, while the leaves , for the textile and construction industry.

Lucena organized the group of experts from Latin America that will be at the forum. Among Brazilians, the only speaker is Patrícia Villela, president of Humanitas360, an NGO that works to reduce violence and improve the quality of life of the female prison population. She takes the stage (10am New York) to speak about the need for regulation of the cannabis for building a more inclusive society. In Brazil, the regulation of medicinal and industrial hemp was proposed in PL 399-2015, which is stalled in the Chamber of Deputies, due to pressure from the evangelical wing of the Government.

The panels are divided into major themes, such as economy, society, environment, technology and health. The event will be open to the general public. To do so, simply register here.
