Podcast debates mental health of students and teachers at reopening

by

This Tuesday’s episode (3) of the Folha na Sala podcast debates how public schools are dealing with the mental health of teachers and students after more than two years of a pandemic.

After an episode of collective anxiety crisis that affected 26 young people in a school in Pernambuco, the subject came up, but teachers and managers already anticipated the emergence of emotional issues.

A survey by the University of Calgary, Canada, evaluated studies with more than 80,000 participants aged up to 18 years from different countries. The result showed that, during the pandemic, one in four children and adolescents showed clinical signs of depression. And one in five had symptoms of anxiety.

One of the effects felt in schools was the increase in episodes of violence. In São Paulo, there were 108 occurrences of aggression per school day in almost 5,000 schools in the state network.

But it’s not just students who have suffered from mental health problems. Teachers have also felt the pressure, aggravating a situation that already existed before the pandemic.

A survey by Nova Escola carried out in 2019, that is, before the circulation of the coronavirus, showed that 60% of teachers had symptoms of anxiety and stress. And 87% of respondents believed it was related to the profession.

In Vila Prudente, on the east side of São Paulo, Folha na Sala visited the state school Américo de Moura, which developed a program for welcoming students that became a reference.

The program interviews specialists Gustavo Estanislau, from the Ame Sua Mente Institute, and Guilherme Polanczyk, from the USP School of Medicine.

In its fifth season, Folha na Sala discusses, in nine weekly episodes, what are the challenges of education and public school in 2022, in the resumption of face-to-face classes after two years of opening and closing due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The podcast is a partnership between Folha and Itaú Social. The program is presented by journalists Ricardo Ampudia and Juliana Deodoro. The coordination was by Angela Pinho and Magê Flores. The sound editing is by Luan Alencar.
