The Russian journalist Dmitry Muratov, awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2021, today denounced Russian propaganda on the use of nuclear weapons in Ukraine, stressing that instead of ending the war, “it threatens to end humanity.”

Speaking at a press conference on the occasion of Freedom of the Press Day, Muratov said Kremlin propagandists were trying to make the use of nuclear weapons more acceptable to Russian public opinion. “We have been hearing on our televisions for two weeks now that the nuclear silos should be opened. “And we also hear that these horrible weapons should be used if arms deliveries to Ukraine continue.”
Contrary to what propaganda claims, the development of such weapons “would not mean the end of war but the end of humanity,” he added.
According to Muratov, the most frightening thing in Russia today is “the absolute, unrestricted” power that Putin has gained. “If the Russian president decides that nuclear weapons should be used,” no one can stop him from making that decision (…) neither parliament, nor civil society, nor the public, “he said.
