Bone mass measurement: A rapid, non-invasive test for the diagnosis of osteoporosis

by

It is a condition that mainly affects women but often also elderly men. It occurs more often in postmenopausal women and high-risk women (premature menopause, rheumatism, etc.).

Osteoporosis: A chronic disease
Osteoporosis is a chronic disease of bone metabolism, in which there is a progressive decrease in their density and quality. It is characterized by low bone mass and destruction of the structure of bone tissue that makes the bones fragile and leads to fractures mainly of the hip, spine and wrist (disorder of the quality and quantity of bone).

Diagnosis
Osteoporosis is diagnosed by measuring bone mass to calculate bone mass and density. During the examination, the radiological machines use the method of “dual energy absorption measurement with X-rays” (DEXA). The dose of radiation to which the subjects are exposed by this method is very small.

The new HealthSpot diagnostic centers of the Hellenic Healthcare Group have state-of-the-art Bone Density Measurement (Lunar Prodigy Advance General Electric & Horizon – Hologic) machines for the diagnosis of osteoporosis and the prevention of osteoporotic fractures, which:
• They have up to 40% better clinical accuracy in detecting bone loss.
• They have the possibility of full-body imaging, with accurate results of bone density and body composition (total fat, lean and bone tissue) in one scan.
Special scanning technology assesses fracture risk, as spinal fractures can be identified with a low-dose, single-energy imaging within 10 seconds.
• They have the ability to evaluate a wide range of clinical conditions with speed and accuracy, while they are also suitable for imaging in large, obese patients.
With the clear, high-resolution images they provide, accurate calcification of the calcified plaque in the abdominal aorta is performed, which can be an important indication of heart disease and stroke.
The reduced examination time and the low dose X-rays ensure a comfortable experience for the examinees.

What tests are performed
The following tests are performed in the Osteoponometry department of HealthSpot:
• Measurement of lumbar spine bone density (indicated in young people who do not show vertebral osteophytes or calcifications of the abdominal aorta).
• Measurement of hip bone density (indicated in middle-aged and elderly people).
• Measurement of bone density of two hips (dual hip method).
• Measurement of bone density of the wrist.
• Full body fat measurement (indicated for dieters as well as athletes).

EOPYY referrals for the examination are accepted.

HealthSpot: Integrated network of high quality primary health services
The HealthSpot diagnostics were created by the Hellenic Healthcare Group (HHG), the largest private healthcare provider in Greece, and provide high quality diagnostic and personalized treatment services for every health issue. They are located in 4 central points of Attica (Kifissia, Peristeri, Glyfada and Piraeus within the PPA), are equipped with state-of-the-art technology and are staffed by highly trained and specialized medical staff, with interest in humans.

HealthSpot is in open communication with its clinics Hellenic Healthcare Group (Health, Metropolitan Hospital, Mother, Metropolitan General, Leto, Creta InterClinic) thus offering the possibility of performing diagnostic tests and visiting a doctor of the Group.
Finally, they are distinguished for their innovation as they have digital health applications, while they also provide the possibility of examinations and medical care at home.
