Scientists have developed a urine test that can detect the presence of antibodies against it SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus with accuracy comparable – if not better – to that of an existing blood test.
The ELISA (Enzyme-Linked ImmunoSorbent Assay) test thus provides a new non-invasive method that can be used to determine the extent to which a population has been exposed to Covid-19, as well as to assess the individual risk of infection.
The researchersled by Dr. Fernanda Ludolph of the School of Medicine of the Brazilian Federal University of Minas Gerais, published in the journal Science Advances, stated that “the test may be used to detect antibodies generated by from vaccines “.
The test was tested on 209 samples from 139 patients, two to 60 days after the onset of Covid-19 symptoms. The results were compared with the homonymous blood test ELISA. The urine test was found to successfully detect antibodies in 187 samples, showing sensitivity of 94% and specificity of 100%, versus 88% and 100% of the blood test, respectively.
