By now you are probably quite familiar with the psychological symptoms of burnout.

You know the drill: irritation, numbness, struggle to make decisions, completely overwhelming, not all of it fun.

But what about the physical symptoms that often appear as an early warning sign that you’re headed for burnout?

Many of us are not familiar with this area. In other words, you may not know the problem is occurring until it’s too late.

To help us, Delamere Private Rehab Clinic outlines some of the impending physical signs of exhaustion.

headache

Don’t just use painkillers, think you’re fine.

Tension headaches can often occur as a result of chronic stress, and if you continue to experience them, exhaustion may be the cause.

Stomach and digestive problems

“Because stress increases the production of certain hormones and neurotransmitters in the body, exhaustion can also have a negative effect on the health of a person’s stomach,” Delamere experts say.

“This affects the delicate balance of bacteria in the human intestine and can cause gastric problems such as dyspepsia, gastritis and gastroesophageal reflux.

“Digestion is affected and slowed down, which can lead to bloating, pain and constipation, or can accelerate the exacerbation of irritable bowel syndrome symptoms.”

Weight gain

Chronic stress can cause weight gain in several ways.

For one thing, making healthy choices is much more difficult when you’re exposed to a lot of mental stress. You may be drawn to high-sugar, high-fat, low-nutrient foods to feel comfortable or to boost your energy levels. You are unlikely to exercise. Who has the energy after another long day at work?

There are also hormonal changes caused by stress that can lead to weight gain.

Cortisol, known as a stress hormone, overflows throughout the body when you are stressed and overwhelmed. The side effect of this is to encourage the body to store fat cells, especially around the abdomen.

sleep changes

Can’t you move suddenly? Throw at night, turn around and wake up? Do you wake up before you wake up?

Or are you sleeping better than before? How tired do you feel when you rest? Do you fall asleep every time you sit down in a meeting?

These can all be signs of exhaustion.

“Burnout syndrome and high levels of stress can cause the autonomic nervous system to release hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol, causing significant changes in sleep patterns, often leading to insomnia and fatigue,” Delamere’s team said.

Frequent colds and infections.

A Dela Mer expert said:

This is because stress suppresses the immune system, making the body more susceptible to disease and making it harder for the body to fight back.

Stress reduces the body’s lymphocytes (white blood cells that fight viruses) and makes the body more susceptible to infection.

“But in addition, constant stress means that the body adapts to excess cortisol, which desensitizes the immune system and makes it impossible to easily regulate the inflammatory response.”
