(News Bulletin 247) – Carbios announced on Monday that the consortium created in recycled textiles with brands like Patagonia and Puma would welcome a new partner, in this case the American PVH Corp. owner of the Calvin Klein and Tommy Hilfiger brands.
Under the terms of the alliance, which also includes the French Salomon and the Swiss On, the six partners will work together to test and improve the biological recycling technology developed by Carbios on their products.
The objective of the consortium is to prove the principle of closed circularity ‘fibre to fibre’ within the fashion sector by using the Carbios biorecycling process on an industrial scale.
During the two years foreseen by the collaboration agreement, Carbios and its partners will work together in order to succeed in the biological recycling of polyester articles on an industrial scale.
Consortium members also want to study efficient sorting and treatment technologies for complex textile waste.
According to a study by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, only 13% of textile waste is currently recycled worldwide, mainly in lower quality applications such as padding, insulation or rags.
The remaining 87% is destined for landfill or incineration
