(News Bulletin 247) – Retail sales continued to recover in February in Great Britain, thanks in particular to the success of discount stores in the current inflationary context, official data published on Friday show.
The Office for National Statistics (ONS) announced this morning that retail sales had increased by 1.2% in volume over one month after having already increased by 0.9% in January (figure revised from +0.5 %).
These figures show that household consumption is holding up well in the United Kingdom despite the cost of living crisis that has been hitting the country for many months.
Non-food ‘discount’ stores largely contributed to the dynamism of consumption by posting a growth of 2.4% in their sales from one month to the next.
Volume sales in the food sector rose 0.9% last month after a small increase of 0.1% in January, amid reduced spending in restaurants due to inflation.
Petrol sales fell 1.1% in February after a 1.1% jump in January, which the ONS explains as the effect of strikes in the rail sector which had forced Britons to use their cars more .
