(News Bulletin 247) – ABB announced on Thursday that it plans to build a new production site in Albuquerque, New Mexico, for the electric utility sector.
The factory – which should extend over more than 8,000 m2 – represents an investment of some 40 million dollars, with the prospect of 55 job creations at stake.
The Swiss engineering group specifies that the project, whose construction has already started, aims to meet the growing demand for its Elastimold switchgear modules.
These components are used by electricity providers to consolidate their networks and make them more resilient.
The site, which is scheduled to go into service next year, will be equipped with the latest digital automation and robotics technologies developed by ABB, which should allow it to produce one million units per year.
This new unit will be installed right next to the existing infrastructures of ABB in Albuquerque, where the Swiss group has – since the takeover of Thomas & Betts – 40 hectares dedicated to the manufacture of electrical products.
Knowing that this site already employs 450 people, ABB will join, with its expansion plans, the ranking of the top 10 employers in New Mexico.
