(News Bulletin 247) – The American markets will experience an exceptional closure ten times during the year 2023 on weekdays, including this Monday, January 2.

In view of the sometimes significant influence of the American markets on the evolution of the prices of their European counterparts, investors must watch the Wall Street calendar, even if they are focused on French or European equities. If only for liquidity reasons.

Once again, the New York Stock Exchange will experience more closing days in 2023 than Paris. It must be said that public holidays across the Atlantic are often fixed on a Monday, or observed on a Monday if they fall during a weekend. Here are the weekdays on which the American markets will therefore be exceptionally closed this year:

  • Monday January 2 (for the new year)
  • Monday, January 16 (commemoration of the birth of Martin Luther King)
  • Monday, February 20 (commemoration of the birth of George Washington)
  • Friday, April 7 (Good Friday)
  • Monday, May 29 (Memorial Day)
  • Monday, June 19 (Juneteenth – day to commemorate the end of slavery)
  • Tuesday July 4 (national holiday)
  • Monday, September 4 (Labour Day)
  • Thursday, November 23 (Thanksgiving)
  • Monday, December 25 (Christmas celebration)

The doors of the American market remain open on October 9, but this date corresponds to a holiday for the rest of the economy (Columbus Day), stock market activity should be very reduced.

In addition, New York Stock Exchange equity trading will only take place in a half-session (closes at 1 p.m. local time) on July 3, the day before National Day, and November 24 (the day after Thanksgiving).
