PARIS (Reuters) – The pace of inflation continued to accelerate in France over one year in April but it slowed slightly compared to March, according to an initial estimate published on Friday by INSEE.

The consumer price index (CPI) rose by 5.9% over the twelve months to the end of April, against 5.7% at the end of March. Economists polled by Reuters had expected stability.

From one month to the next, however, the rise in prices slowed down to +0.6% after +0.9% in March.

The consumer price index harmonized according to European HICP standards, which allows comparisons with other euro zone countries, was up 6.9% over one year at the end of April (compared to 6 .7% at the end of March), above expectations at 6.6%.

HICP inflation also slowed monthly, to +0.7%, against +1.0% in March.

Food prices, closely scrutinized in this period of soaring inflation, should have slowed down in April compared to the previous month, indicates INSEE, due in particular to a decline in the prices of fresh products, as well as those of manufactured goods and tobacco.
