(News Bulletin 247) – Today, Apple and Google presented a proposal for industrial specifications to combat the misuse of geolocation devices for unwanted tracking purposes.
These new specifications will allow Bluetooth geolocation devices to be compatible with detection and tracking alerts on iOS and Android platforms.
Samsung, Tile, Chipolo, eufy Security and Pebblebee have expressed support for the project, which offers guidance to manufacturers if they decide to incorporate these standards into their products.
“This new specification is, through collaboration with Google, a critical step in the fight against unwanted tracking on iOS and Android platforms,” said Ron Huang, vice president of Apple.
“Bluetooth trackers have created huge benefits for users, but they also leave the door open to tracking, which forces the industry to take corrective action,” said Dave Burke, vice president at Google.
Interested parties are invited to review and comment on these specifications over the next three months. After this time, Apple and Google will proceed with the application of the specifications for tracking alerts by the end of 2023.
