Serbia has been in shock since Wednesday morning, after the massacre that took place in a school in Belgrade, when a 14-year-old student opened fire, killing eight students (seven girls and a boy) with the youngest victim being 14 years old as well as a guard. At the same time, he injured six other children and a teacher, most of whom are hospitalized in critical condition.

The police identified the attacker by announcing the initials of KK and added that he was a student of the school. In a press conference given by the police representative, more details were given about how the 14-year-old acted and the possible motives that led him to this horrible act.

As the representative said, the 14-year-old opened fire with a 9mm gun which he took from his father. The minor left school early. Inside his backpack he placed four Molotov cocktails, the spokesman said. Arriving again at the entrance of the school, he immediately took out his gun and shot at the guard, who lost his life. He then pointed his gun at another child sitting at the table and shot him.

As he said, the perpetrator planned the massacre a month in advance. In fact, he had a list of kids he would target and planned in detail which classes he would go to first. The attacker chose to enter that particular room and open fire because, as the representative said, it was the closest class to the school’s entrance. However, he emphasized that the motive of the 14-year-old is not yet known. At the same time, the perpetrator had also created a detailed plan of the entrance and exit of the school – which was found in his office. “The sketch looks like something out of a video game or horror movie,” the spokesperson added.

He further stated that this is a child who is an excellent student according to his teachers and has never had any mental or emotional problems.

According to the country’s Minister of Education who was present at the police briefing, the 14-year-old had been the victim of bullying by his interlocutors, adding that there are reports from social workers and from a hospital that “violence was used against him, but it was not done in school” and the case was closed without further problems.

Milan Milosevic, father of a student at the elementary school, said his daughter was in the classroom when the 14-year-old entered and started shooting. “He managed to escape. [Το αγόρι]… first he shot the teacher and then he started shooting randomly,” he told N1 TV station. He added that he saw the guard lying under the table. “I saw two girls with blood on their shirts. They say that [ο δράστης] he was quiet and a good student.”

In the meantime, the last photo, before the crime, that the 14-year-old had “uploaded” on his Instagram account is also creepy.

Mass shootings in Serbia and the wider Balkan region are extremely rare. No incidents have been reported in schools in recent years. In 2013, a Balkan war veteran killed 13 people in a village in central Serbia.

Serbia has very strict gun laws, but experts have repeatedly warned of the danger from the hundreds of thousands of illegal weapons in existence.
