(News Bulletin 247) – Waga Energy has commissioned a new production unit at the waste landfill in Saint-Etienne-des-Grés (Quebec, Canada), operated by the public body Énercycle.

Waga Energy and Énercycle have started injecting renewable natural gas (RNG), also called biomethane, into Énergir’s network by starting up the WAGABOX® unit.

This unit has the capacity to inject up to 130 GWh of RNG per year, i.e. 12.4 million cubic meters each year, into the gas network, thus contributing to the objectives set by the ‘Plan for a green economy’ of the Government of Quebec. .

‘This new WAGABOX® unit is Waga Energy’s largest commissioning to date. It will be able to process up to 3,400 m3/h of waste gas and produce up to 130 GWh/year (i.e. 12,400,000 m³ or 468,000 Gj) of biomethane per year, corresponding to the gas consumption of approximately 8 000 Quebec households. The emission of 21,500 tonnes of eqCO2 could be avoided each year by thus reducing the use of fossil natural gas’ indicates the group.

Under the contract signed with Énercycle, Waga Energy will operate the unit and ensure its maintenance for at least 20 years.

This is the first WAGABOX® unit started by Waga Energy internationally. Three other units are under construction in Canada, and two more in the United States and Spain.

Mathieu Lefebvre, Chairman and CEO of Waga Energy: ‘The successful start-up of the first WAGABOX® unit in North America is a major milestone in the deployment of our solution dedicated to the fight against global warming and the energy transition. ‘
