(News Bulletin 247) – Air France-KLM announces that in 2022 it has purchased 17% of the world’s production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) while the Group represented only 3% of the world’s kerosene consumption, thus confirming its desire to be a more sustainable aviation leader.
The group indicates that it only buys SAF that does not compete with human or animal food, does not come from palm oil and allows a reduction in CO2 emissions of at least 75% over the entire cycle. of life.
In this context, the Air France-KLM Group goes beyond regulations and has set itself the target of at least 10% incorporation of SAF by 2030 worldwide, and not just on those departing from France and Europe.
However, in the absence of an established industrial production chain, SAF is currently 4 to 8 times more expensive than conventional fuel.
In 2023, the incorporation of 1% of SAF already represents an additional cost of 100 million euros for Air France.
In this context, the company recalls that at the end of 2022 it signed two contracts with Neste and DG Fuels for the supply of 1.6 million tonnes of SAF (first deliveries expected in 2023), as well as a memorandum of understanding with TotalEnergies for the supply of 800,000 tons of sustainable fuel for 10 years.
