(News Bulletin 247) – Engie announced on Tuesday that it has acquired, alongside Meridiam, BTE Renewables, a specialist in renewable energies in South Africa and Kenya, an operation that will enable the French group to continue its development. outside of Europe and the Americas.
The transaction will provide Engie with some 340 MW net of operational renewable capacity (150 MW of onshore wind and 190 MW of solar photovoltaic), as well as a portfolio of more than 3 GW of projects in the advanced development phase.
This takeover should thus enable the group to further strengthen its presence in South Africa, a booming market where it already operates 1.3 GW of assets, including more than 300 MW in renewable energies.
The agreement includes a sale of the Kenyan assets by Engie to Meridiam upon closing of the transaction.
Meridiam will thus get its hands on the Kipeto wind farm, with a capacity of 100 MW, located about 70 km south of Nairobi and operational since July 2021.
The closing of the transaction, the amount of which has not been disclosed, is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2023.
