(Reuters) – Rio Tinto announced on Tuesday the appointment of Jérôme Pécresse as head of its aluminum activities, whose mining group aims to reduce carbon emissions.
Jérôme Pécresse, husband of Valérie Pécresse, president of the Ile-de-France region and former Les Républicains candidate in the 2022 presidential election in France, will take up his new post on October 23. During his career, he has held executive positions in companies in the mining and energy sectors, such as Alstom and General Electric (GE) Renewable Energy.
“Jérôme brings a wealth of experience in renewable energy, mining, business development and strategy, ideal for shaping a low-carbon future for our industry-leading Aluminum Group,” said Rio Tinto chief executive Jakob Stausholm.
Jérôme Pécresse will replace Ivan Vella, who announced his departure in June after more than two years in this position.
“I am delighted to join Rio Tinto to continue building a stronger and more sustainable global aluminum producer, with our teams around the world. We have a key role to play in implementing Rio Tinto’s strategy. and in producing the materials needed in a low-carbon world,” said Jérôme Pécresse, who will move to Quebec for his new role.
The aluminum activity contributed around a quarter of Rio Tinto’s 55.55 billion dollars (51.6 billion euros) in sales for the 2022 financial year.
