PARIS (Reuters) – Eramet and Suez have chosen the city of Dunkirk (North) to install an electric car battery recycling plant, the two parties announced in a press release on Friday, seeking to benefit from the development of battery production in this region of France.

Under this partnership, the mining group Eramet and the company specializing in waste and water Suez will create a factory to destroy lithium-ion batteries with a second unit responsible for separating refined metals such as nickel, cobalt and carbon. lithium for reuse in batteries.

A final decision on the investment is expected by the end of the year with production launching in 2025.

A test plant for the refining process is about to open at Eramet’s research center near Paris, the two companies added.

Several “gigafactories” producing electric car batteries are to be created in the north of France, under the leadership of the French government which aims to create a Battery Valley.

The Eramet and Suez factory will have the capacity to recycle 50,000 tonnes of battery modules per year, the equivalent of 200,000 electric vehicle batteries, indicate the two companies.

The mining group Eramet recently refocused its operations on batteries, notably with a lithium production project in Argentina which is due to start next year.
