NEW YORK (Reuters) – The New York Stock Exchange ended mixed on Tuesday, with the Nasdaq hitting a closing record while the Dow Jones fell at the end of an up-and-down session as the week is marked by numerous quarterly results including those of Alphabet, Google’s parent company, after the close.
The Dow Jones index lost 0.36%, or 154.52 points, to 42,233.05 points.
The broader S&P-500 gained 9.45 points, or 0.16%, to 5,832.97 points.
The Nasdaq Composite advanced 145.56 points (0.78%) to 18,712.75 points.
Five of Wall Street’s “Magnificent Seven” are releasing their quarterly results this week, eagerly awaited as they are considered to reveal the sustainability of gains in technology stocks in the wake of the craze around artificial intelligence (AI).
The main Wall Street indices have reached multiple records this year thanks to the heavyweights of “tech”.
According to Bill Merz, director of research for US Bank’s asset management group, “one of the things the market is pricing in is the idea of some convergence in earnings growth across big names and the rest of the market.
Investors anticipate several weeks of volatility on the markets, between quarterly results, tensions in the Middle East and the American presidential election on November 5, which will be followed by a monetary policy meeting of the Federal Reserve (Fed) .
A series of quarterly results were published during the day.
At the same time, a report from the US Department of Labor shows that job openings were lower than expected in September.
Among the major S&P-500 sectors, communications services was the best performer, thanks to Alphabet and Meta.
However, gains were limited, with the yield on ten-year US Treasury bonds standing at 4.3% for the first time since early July.
On the value side, note the 8.4% decline in Ford, which said it expected its annual profit to be at the bottom of the communicated range.
VF Corp, owner of the Vans brand, jumped 27% after reporting a profit for the first time in two quarters.
