Washington (Reuters) – US President Donald Trump awarded the contract for the construction of the F -47 on Friday, the most sophisticated hunter to date in the American Air Force, as part of the Next Generation Air Dominance (NGAD) program.
The NGAD program must replace the F-22 Raptor by Lockheed Martin with an airplane designed to fight alongside drones.
The engineering and development contract amounts to more than $ 20 billion.
Donald Trump, the 47th President of the United States, confirmed that the new jet would be called the F-47.
“We have placed a large number (of devices). We cannot tell you the price,” he told journalists in the oval office.
“Our allies are constantly calling us,” added Donald Trump, adding that sales abroad could be an option. “They also want to buy them”.
The Boeing action increased by 4.2%, while that of Lockheed Martin fell 6.9% after the announcement.
This victory over Lockheed Martin marks a turning point for Boeing, which recently experienced difficulties in the commercial sector and that of La Défense, and for its activity to produce combat aircraft in Saint-Louis, Missouri.
“Compared to F-22, the F-47 will cost less and will be more adaptable to future threats-and we will have more F-47 in our inventory,” said the chief of staff of the United States air force, General David Allvin.
The contract contractor will benefit from hundreds of billions of dollars in orders during the contract, which extends over several decades.
Boeing and Lockheed did not immediately respond to requests for comments.
