On board Air Force One (Reuters) – US President Donald Trump, questioned on Sunday on the fall in financial markets, said that it was sometimes necessary to take “drugs” and said that it would not return to the vast customs duties announced last week, adding that the United States was “stronger”.

“I do not want anything to plunge, but sometimes you have to take medication to correct something,” he said about the economic repercussions of his trade policy.

“We were very badly treated by the other countries, because we had a stupid leadership that allowed this,” he added in front of the journalists present aboard the Air Force One presidential plane who brought him back to Washington from his Florida residence.

Donald Trump, who had a backward time on customs duties aimed at products from Canada and Mexico by granting Ottawa and Mexico City, has not shown any sign suggesting that he could change his mind about the so -called reciprocal taxes to come into force on Wednesday.

“I cannot tell you what will happen for the markets. But our country is much stronger,” said the American president.

Regarding China, which will be targeted by 34% surcharge on its products imported into the United States, the head of the White House has excluded any agreement as long as the question of trade deficit with the second world economic power is “not resolved”.

He also said that he had intervened with European and Asian leaders about customs duties, adding that these “die of the desire to conclude an agreement”.
