(Reuters) – TotalEnergies said on Friday that TotalEnergies SE, TotalEnergies Electricité and Gaz France will not appeal the conviction of the oil group by the Paris judicial court for “deceptive commercial practices” linked to a communication campaign dating from 2021 on its climate commitments.
On Thursday, TotalEnergies was ordered to pay 8,000 euros to three non-governmental organizations (NGOs) “in compensation for their moral damage” and to pay a total of 15,000 euros to cover their legal costs after they accused it of misleading allegations about its carbon neutrality ambition.
The group was also forced to remove from its website all statements relating to carbon neutrality and the energy transition deemed misleading, and to publish a link to the legal decision, within one month, under penalty of being inflicted with sanctions of up to 20,000 euros per day.
“With all due respect to all those who want to continue to accuse us of ‘greenwashing’ despite everything we have already accomplished for the energy transition in France and around the world, we are proud to put all our energies at the service of the daily lives of our customers, to contribute to global energy security, and to participate in the construction of the energy system of tomorrow,” the group declared in a press release on Friday.
