(News Bulletin 247) – The Parisian index ends this session on Monday October 27 with a slight increase. Schneider Electric stood out, driven by an increase in advice from Morgan Stanley to “overweight” from “online weighting” previously.
Sluggish start to the week on the Paris Stock Exchange. The CAC 40 gained 0.16% to close at 8,239.18 points, this Monday, October 27, benefiting from the support of Schneider Electric which remains the stock which exerts the strongest influence on the CAC 40 (it is the largest weighting in the calculation of the index).
Market operators are opting for caution at the start of a week full of news. “Investors are preparing for a busy week, including the decisions of four G7 central banks on their key rates: the Fed (the American Federal Reserve, Editor’s note) and the Bank of Canada on Wednesday, followed by the Bank of Japan and the European Central Bank on Thursday,” explains Deutsche Bank.
A busy week
A wave of results will once again liven up the odds. In Paris, a dozen CAC 40 companies will deliver their publications while on Wall Street, Gafam (Alphabet, Apple, Meta, Amazon, Microsoft) will reveal their accounts, Wednesday evening and Thursday evening. In addition, the American and Chinese presidents, Donald Trump and Xi Jinping, will meet on Thursday to try to resolve their trade differences.
On this last point, “the Chinese Ministry of Commerce said that the two sides had reached a preliminary agreement on a series of issues, including the extension of the tariff truce, fentanyl, agricultural trade, export controls and taxes on shipments”, notes Deutsche Bank.
“For his part, the American Secretary of the Treasury, Scott Bessent, suggested that China would postpone for a year its new measures to control exports of rare earths and would make “substantial” purchases of American soybeans, while the American threat to impose 100% customs duties on China was “effectively ruled out”, continues the bank.
Schneider Electric electrified by Morgan Stanley
On the value side, Schneider Electric closed at the top of the CAC 40, gaining 2%. The action was driven by Morgan Stanley which upgraded its opinion on the stock to “overweight” from “line weight” previously. The American bank estimates that the French group’s adjusted operating margin will increase in the next two years.
Exosens fell by 1.8% although the group published an increase in its activity over the first nine months, still benefiting from sustained demand for its image intensifiers.
On other markets, the euro gained 0.1% against the dollar to 1.1639 dollars. Oil is rising a little. The December contract on North Sea Brent gained 0.1% to $65.28 per barrel while the December contract on WTI listed in New York rose 0.3% to $61.70 per barrel.
