Ballads and shows return to have tracks and crowding in SP; see party schedule

by

It’s been about 600 days without parties — at least officially. In recent months, people have even been able to return to São Paulo’s nightclubs and concert halls, but at tables distributed on the dance floor and listening to music sitting on chairs. But the scenario has days to change. Despite the fact that the Covid-19 pandemic still kills an average of 300 people a day in the country, a certain New Year’s atmosphere in the city is being prepared for the coming 31st.

On Sunday, when the clocks indicate midnight and São Paulo dawn enters on Monday, November 1st, the tables and chairs of the nightclubs can be officially put away — and everyone can get up, dance and gather once more.

It is on the 1st that the São Paulo government loosens sanitary restrictions even more and endorses the milder phase of quarantine in São Paulo, authorizing clubs and concert halls to reopen their dancefloors and allow guests to stand, dancing together each other. The date falls on a Monday, but it’s a holiday eve—so the date is also scheduled.

And, with that, the spaces already start to move. This is the case of Club Yacht, which promotes the Halloyacht party from Sunday (31) to Monday (1st), in a New Year’s Eve pop mood for the reopening countdown.

Bob Yang, one of Yacht’s partners, says he has good expectations. “We feel that the public is excited, so we are too,” he says. When asked about a possible worsening in Covid’s cases, Yang says he doesn’t doubt anything else, but tries to be positive.

Loosening is the final step in a process that is already underway in the capital. In a decree published in this Thursday’s (28) edition of the Official Gazette of the City, Mayor Ricardo Nunes (MDB) revoked all restrictions on occupation, opening hours and minimum distance in public and private establishments in the capital.

According to the city hall, the decree allows spaces that rock the night to start operating at full capacity and people standing. The text maintains the mandatory use of masks and establishes that events with more than 500 people must mandatorily require proof of vaccination from visitors.

Despite this, many nightclubs and parties will only enter the mood of “general release” from Monday, the 1st, when the government of João Doria (PSDB) loosens the quarantine rules for the entire state.

As with the municipal decree, the new state rule also directly erodes distancing norms. Eduardo Aranibar, Undersecretary for Competitiveness of Industry, Commerce and Services of the government of São Paulo, says that the distance of one meter between strangers becomes a recommendation — and no longer an obligation. Aranibar also states that homes should have alcohol gel available for everyone present.’

The inspection of safety protocols is the responsibility of the Secretary of State for Health. When contacted, the folder said in a note that “the Health Surveillance continues to work in the field to monitor compliance with sanitary standards for preventing and combating Covid-19, both through complaints as from routine actions of the teams”.

Ballads, parties and concert halls, with tight environments, full of people rubbing each other, sharing drinks and kissing on the mouth, are the perfect setting for the virus to multiply — and also the last frontier of liberation in São Paulo.

Adipe Neto, producer of parties such as Santo Forte and Lunatica —both with dates set for November— believes that this will be a moment of “great new beginning” for the sector, mainly in the financial area. “This is our last big breath, after more than 20 months without working,” says he, who has not hosted dance floor parties since March of last year.

Despite high expectations for the presence of the public, Neto reinforces the importance of maintaining health security. “More than a full house, we want to make it happen in a safe way. The objective is to bring back the shine of the parties, but without having to go back and forth,” he says.

In the case of bars, they can already receive 100% of the house’s capacity since August 17th. Now, starting in November, these spaces can also offer drinks for people standing.

But not everyone will change the rules. Lilian Varella, owner of the Drosophyla Bar, says that the house will continue to function as it is today. “There was an employee at the bar who took Covid, even though she was vaccinated. I’m not going to stay in this hoopla, I’m not trusting,” she says.

For those who couldn’t wait to get together, drink and dance with strangers in closed spaces, below are ten events scheduled in São Paulo in the coming days. But despite the fact that just over 98% of the population of São Paulo over the age of 12 is already vaccinated with at least one dose or a single dose of the immunizing agent against Covid, the pandemic is not over yet.

Even with the weather back to normal, the safest thing is to continue to avoid crowded and indoor events. But if you decide to go anyway, click here to find out what precautions should be taken to reduce the risk of contagion.

The house has not been functioning since the quarantine began in São Paulo. Facundo Guerra, owner of the site, says that the physical space deteriorated while it was idle — that’s why he had to renovate the environment, which should be reopened to the public on November 21, with no schedule yet revealed. What is certain, however, is that Novo Cine Joia will require a passport for the vaccine.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, there have been some online editions and even with tables on the dancefloor, but, for Moraes, the events were not able to meet the demands of the public or artists. The period served for him to research new sounds and assemble a setlist with news from the Brazilian independent scene for the return of the party.
