Defensive driving allows the driver to anticipate potential hazards

by

It is well known that defensive driving is defined by the set of behaviors that allow the driver to anticipate, recognize and take all necessary measures in order to safely avoid potential hazards.

It helps the driver to better understand the pitfalls of the road, while when driving defensively he has a better understanding of traffic conditions, has a greater respect for other drivers and predicts any mistakes.

Recently, the Institute for Sustainability and Safety with the distinctive title “Issue of Life” participated in the conference LOGI.C22 where the concept of “defensive driving” was mentioned. The chemical engineer Pantelis Kosmidis focused his presentation on the understanding of this concept which “among other things is the one that prepares the driver to react in a timely and correct manner. It is an educational process which with the appropriate conditions, the experienced trainers, the theoretical background and the material-technical infrastructure of experiential education, can give impressive results in terms of improving the safety in urban transport “, stressed Mr. Kosmidis.

On the subject of defensive driving, the civil engineer and transport expert, Athanasios Tsiotras pointed out that: “Defensive driving is a foreign term. The Greek is the dude, the one who knows how to drive and does not want hints. Defensive driving is driving that has to do with risk prediction. It’s the driver’s early warning, it’s the skills the driver must have on the road. We should all work with experiential tools, such as software and simulators that have been around for decades. The state should have training centers with simulators. Finally, traffic education should be introduced in schools. Defensive driving is smart driving which means zero accidents. To do this requires a lot of work. If there are experiences from simulators then in a difficult moment the brain will automatically recall it and will react in the appropriate way “.

As for whether transport specialists can contribute to the reduction of road accidents, Mr. Tsiotras stressed that “clearly transport specialists can also contribute to the reduction of road accidents. We must have zero accidents. The issue is how we will pass it on to the world. We must give him instructions and directions from an early age and from school. It is not possible for a population of 10 million, with so many institutions and universities, not to take the subject of traffic education in schools. Many elements of circulatory education are copied from abroad. But the culture of the Greek is very different from that of the European. With few classes in schools and few institutions trying to teach children traffic education, we can not achieve excellent results. It requires repetitions and a lot of effort. But the question is what does the driver do to become a better driver? We say for example do not talk on the cell phone while driving and the driver does the opposite. “In one hand he holds the mobile phone low and writes and with the other he holds the steering wheel”.
