Orca rescue operation on the Seine River – Watch video

by

The French authorities devised a plan to drive back into the ocean an orc that lost its orientation and was found in the river Seine: using the sounds of killer whales (as they are called because of their common English name – killer whales).

Following a meeting attended by French and foreign scientists, including experts in marine mammals, it was announced that the orca would be monitored remotely by drones, while sounds from the whales of this species would be emitted, in an attempt to lead them back to the ocean.

“Using these non-invasive methods, from a distance of several hundred meters, will prevent boats from approaching her, which could intensify her anxiety and endanger both her life and the safety of the rescuers,” he said. announcement.

The whale, whose health is deteriorating in freshwater, was removed from the ocean several days ago and is in danger of dying.

The four-meter-long orca, identified as male, was first spotted at the mouth of the Seine on May 16, between the port of Le Havre and the town of Honfler in Normandy, before traveling tens of kilometers west of Rouen.

The French media showed images of the orca in the river, with its dorsal fin protruding from the water and its characteristic black and white skin being visible every time it emerges to the surface.
