On Hamburger Day, discover 5 bizarre sandwiches in São Paulo’s cafeterias

by

Two slices of bread with mayonnaise spread evenly, a disc of beef, a slice or two of cheese, sometimes a salad, pieces of bacon and, of course, sachets of ketchup and mustard to go with it. Classic is classic. But Hamburger Day, celebrated this Saturday (28), also has room for unusual – and even bizarre – recipes.

There is no shortage of gastronomic oddities in São Paulo. There is, for example, a house that makes a snack with fried rice crackers in place of bread and raw salmon with cream cheese in the filling – yes, the attempt is to simulate a “sushi burger”.

Another example is sandwiches made with cheese bread instead of traditional bread. And, strange as it may seem, there are even those who sell hamburgers wrapped in red cabbage.

See, below, a selection of five houses in São Paulo that offer different versions of this dish. Enjoy your food.

The Asian Father

The fame of Japanese food restaurants made this diner extrapolate the standards and add a snack called Sushi Burger to the menu. The recipe calls for two breaded and fried rice crackers in place of bread, which wrap a filling made with raw salmon, cream cheese, chives and tare sauce. The dish costs R$24.90 and is a good option for those who don’t have the money to go to an all-you-can-eat meal.

Big Kahuna Burger

The house offers one of those monstrous snacks that only end after countless mouthfuls. The Ezequiel 25:17, sold at R$ 138.80, has 5 beef discs that add up to 700 grams, ten slices of bacon, cheddar and plate cheeses, cucumber pickles, tomato and crisp lettuce. In total, the sandwich weighs 840 grams and can only be consumed on the spot – not least because it would be almost impossible to carry it whole in delivery.

‘O’ Burger

It only takes a few scrolls on the house’s Instagram profile to notice that the menu is full of unusual recipes. The Catupiry Fondue Burguer (R$44.50), for example, places a beef burger inside a bun with a hole in the center – the hole is filled with catupiry fondue. Termite drumsticks accompany the dish, which must be dipped in the cream.

Another bizarre option is the Cascata de Queijo, which costs R$48.50, and has a slice of bread with pepperoni covering a kind of cylinder made of pastry dough – inside the “tower”, there is a mixture of meat-based cream cheese and crunchy pepperoni farofa that fall over the beef burger when the cylinder is removed. Because of the exaggerated size, these dishes are not delivered by delivery.

Matilda Snacks

With the intention of offering snacks for those who cannot eat gluten, the house had a different idea – replacing the bread with pieces of red cabbage. The X Salada no Repolho (R$ 30), for example, includes a smash of beef, cheese, parsley mayonnaise, lettuce, tomato, pickled cucumber and red onion. There are other options, such as the vegetarian Cogumelo no Repolho (R$32), with a burger made with shitake and parmesan. Values may change on delivery.

Pibus Hamburger

The differential of the house is that the snacks can take cheese bread instead of the traditional bread. There are ready-made suggestions on the menu, such as Trembão Bê-Agá (R$37), made with a blend of angus beef, calabrese sausage and bacon, kale crispy and Canastra cheese – all inside a large cheese bread. But those who prefer another option from the menu can order it with cheese bread if they pay an extra R$3.
