Into climate of tension started again today trial of special guard Epamineondas Korkoneas in the Court of Appeal of Lamia which is called to judge whether or not mitigating factors will be recognized in the above for the murder of Alexandros Grigoropoulos in 2008 and will therefore decide whether Korkoneas will remain in prison or will be released.
With the start of the trial and long before the court was set up the counterclaims between the lawyers forced the court to interrupt several times as the defense lawyers of Epameinondas Korkoneas ask the court not to present the lawyers of the civil lawsuit and the family of Alexis Grigoropoulos.
THE Nikos and Zoe Konstantopoulou representing the family (the mother and sister of the murdered Alexis Grigoropoulos are present), ask the court to continue the process with their own presence and participation.
It is recalled that Epameinondas Korkoneas had been released in 2019, having served almost 11 years of his sentence because of the mitigation that the court had granted him, thus breaking the life sentences. In March 2022, however, Korkoneas returned to prison as with a unanimous decision of the Plenary Session of the Supreme Court, the decision of the Prosecutor of the Supreme Court, Vassilis Pliotas, was accepted, which annulled the decision of the Lamia Public Prosecutor’s Office.
The trial was originally scheduled to take place on May 11, 2022 but there it was found that the family side had not been called and the court adjourned the trial and the trial was re-determined by the Lamia Appellate Prosecutor’s Office for today.
After several interruptions, objections and strong counterclaims, the court finally decided how Family ombudsmen do not have the right to participate in the proceedings. This fact infuriated Zoe Konstantopoulou and Nikos Konstantopoulos who reacted by noting that this is an illegal decision and emphasizing that “the court can not decide before it is even established and before it is fully composed with the jurors”.
Under this climate the process continues while the police forces are particularly strong which have been found in the Court of Appeal of Lamia since outside the building are groups of people from the anti-authoritarian space shouting slogans for the murder of Alexis Grigoropoulos.
