When archaeologists “discovered” Mykonos – How it became one of the most cosmopolitan islands

by

Mykonos, the eternal island of winds, “magnetizes” people from all over the world. How from a fishing ground it turned into a cosmopolitan center for the world elite.

Mykonos in the Cyclades, is characterized as one of the most cosmopolitan islands in Greece and Europe.

It “magnetizes” people from all over the world throughout the year, with summer, especially in its alleys, the inseparable prevailing.

But how did the eternal island of the winds turn into an earthly paradise for splendor, glamor, prestige and beauty and become the elite of the islands around the world?

It all started in 1873 when archaeologists from the French Archaeological School began excavations in Delos where, according to mythology, he gave life to Artemis and Apollo.

The unbearable heat as well as the scarce resources made the archaeologists decide that they should find a nearby place so that they could rest and eat properly for the duration of the excavations and so they chose Mykonos, another, completely different Mykonos. which has nothing to do with the glow it “emits” today. The island, however, managed to impress them well in their minds.

Many years passed, the Second World War ended and the young people of the Athenian bourgeoisie came and went to Mykonos. There was no electricity on the island but the landscape exuded magic.

The rich began to visit the island which over time developed a secular character and began to open more and more businesses and shops.

Names such as Aristotle Onassis and Maria Callas, Stavros and Tina Libanou, King Paul and Queen Frederick, Melina Mercouri, Elizabeth Taylor and Barbara Streisard chose it for the holidays.

In 1955 a fisherman found a half-dead pelican which he rescues and in collaboration with the inhabitants of the island they take care of him and thus he becomes the mascot of the island after his baptism as Peter the Pelican.

Shortening the history, Mykonos has evolved into a cosmopolitan island full of natural and artisanal beauties, especially in the 80’s and 90’s when many worldly people including politicians, actors and foreign celebrities invested in buying land on the island and today is a pole of attraction for many locals and foreigners.
