Orange trees, acacias, hibiscus, olives, plane trees, mulberries, oleanders and pines are some of the most characteristic types of trees that beautify the city.
A comprehensive strategic plan regarding the strengthening of greenery in the center and neighborhoods of the capital is in full development by the Municipality of Athens. With a view to improving the quality of life in such a densely built city as Athens, the municipal authority emphasizes the planting hundreds of trees and plants, from one end of the city to the other. It is indicative that in the last 2.5 years, a total of 3,733 trees and about 30,000 bushes were planted, adding greenery to the neighborhoods and more oxygen to the city.
In all seven municipal districts, the greenery is enhanced with trees that are in complete harmony with the environment of Athens: Orange trees, acacias, hibiscus, olives, plane trees, mulberries, oleanders and pines they are some of the most characteristic types of trees that beautify the city, offer breaths of coolness and contribute to its sustainability.
Taking into account the intensity of the heat wave in recent years, the strengthening of greenery in the city contributes to microclimate improvement, reducing the high and unbearable temperatures that prevail. In fact, the green services of the Municipality of Athens increased plantings this year, compared to previous years, with 1,700 new trees in all seven municipal apartments, from the beginning of the year (until May).
“One of our first priorities was to enhance the greenery in this city that needs it. More than two and a half years later, our strategy has paid off. The streets, squares, parks and pedestrian streets in the center and the 129 neighbourhoods, acquire thousands of new trees and shade, offering more coolness to the inhabitants of this densely built city. We continue the effort, freeing up spaces and adding greenery, improving the quality of life for Athenians and making our city sustainable for future generations.” emphasizes in his statement Mayor of Athens, Kostas Bakoyannis.
On his part, Mr Responsible Deputy Mayor for Climate Change and Greening, Christos Tedomas states: “The services of the Municipality of Athens are working intensively to achieve the goal set by our municipal authority: to beautify the neighborhoods with more trees, to offer more oxygen to the Athenians. The effort continues vigorously.”
Green at the “heart” of all interventions
Every project that is planned or carried out in this period in the city is aimed at preserving and enhancing the greenery. An illustrative example is the University’s regeneration project, in which 80 new large trees will completely change the image of the city’s most central street.
With absolute respect for the green, her works will be carried out “Line 4” of the Athens Metro. Throughout their execution, Athens – according to the memorandum signed last March between the Municipality of Athens, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, Anaplasi S.A. and Attiko Metro S.A. – not only will not lose a single tree, but will gain a total of 2,700 new trees, which are planned to be planted.
In the context of the effort to strengthen the greenery, the interventions of the “pocket” parks implemented in the Athenian neighborhoods through the program of the Municipality of Athens “Adopt your city” with the valuable contribution of private companies are also important. Already, nine small “oases” of coolness offer more color and breaths in Sepolia, Pagrati, Patisia, Ano Kypseli, Agios Artemios, Kerameikos, Kato Petralona, Neo Kosmos and Kolonos.
