Vatopoulos: Repetition of Delta or Omicron – More cases, serious diseases

by

The professor of Microbiology at the University of West Attica, Alkiviadis Vatopoulos, spoke about the repetition of the Delta mutation scenario regarding the Omicron variant, speaking to SKAI and the “Kalimera” broadcast. In this context, he stressed that it will be more contagious, there will be many more cases and possibly serious diseases.

“At the moment, a scenario is repeated that we have seen two more times, with the Alpha mutation and the Delta mutation. Biologically what we do know is that the prevailing variants of the virus are the ones that are most easily transmitted. We also know that the variations that prevail are the mildest, because they do not kill people. So again they are easier to transmit. “A logical scenario that we can say that even now with this mutation, if it prevails, it will be more contagious”, he stated characteristically.

He added that the whole population should be aware that we may have a recurrence of the Delta mutation, thus an epidemic intensification, more cases and regardless of whether it is milder, we will have many serious cases. “Even if Omicron is like Delta in terms of the severity of the disease, because we will have many more cases, we will probably have a larger number.”

Mr. Vatopoulos expressed the assessment that it is unlikely that the Omicron mutation will not be covered by the vaccine, even if it is less effective. “What has caused concern is whether it is resistant to the vaccine. I find it extremely unlikely that a virus will appear that does not catch the vaccine. “The bad scenario is to have little effectiveness, which means that suddenly the number of people who can get seriously ill will increase.” .
