Australia: Two cases of the Omicron mutation have been identified

by

Australian health authorities announced today that two cases of the coronavirus variant strain Omicron have been detected in two travelers who arrived in Sydney from southern Africa.

The New South Wales Department of Health in Eastern Australia has announced that tests have been carried out to confirm the presence of the new executive in two travelers who arrived in Sydney on Saturday.

The two passengers were on a Qatar Airways flight and arrived in Australia via Doha, Qatar, the New South Wales health authorities said.

They tested positive for covid-19 on arrival in Sydney, prompting authorities to consider whether they were infected with the Omicron strain, which was first detected in South Africa.

“The two positive cases, which were asymptomatic, are in isolation in specially designed rooms. These two individuals were fully immunized,” the Australian State Department said in a statement.

Twelve travelers from southern Africa who arrived in Australia on the same flight have also been quarantined, although they did not test positive for covid-19.

The approximately 260 passengers on board – passengers and crew – were called to quarantine.
