Makrohori Imathia shocked by the suicide of the man who, as a child in 2003, had been saved from the fatal bus in Tempe.
Unspeakable tragedy in Makrohori Imathia. A 35-year-old man committed suicide using a shotgun. His father found him dead in the bathroom of the house. In accordance with plirophoriodotisthe gunman was among the students on the fatal bus in Tempe, which cost the lives of 21 students.
The chronicle of the tragedy in Tempe in 2003
It was Sunday, April 13, 2003 when one of the biggest tragedies happened on the Greek roads and as a result 21 high school students lost their lives and as many were injured.
Shortly before 7:30 in the afternoon, a bus full of students of the first high school, returns from a trip to Athens, to Makrohori Imathia.
The bus arrived at the height of Tempe, near the church of Agia Paraskevi, with the traffic being increased but generally normal.
A truck was coming from the other stream. He carried novopan. The driver lost control and entered the opposite stream. The novopans and melamines slipped and began to scatter on the road.
Some of them found the bus. As is the truck. In fact, the truck’s “truck” did not just find the bus, but “harvested” it along its entire length.
Three cars crashed into the two vehicles, two of which caught fire but their passengers managed to leave them, while the third hit a rock.
The students returned home tired but happy. They had never imagined that all this would happen. A multitude of mistakes and negligence contributed to the tragedy of Tempe.
21 students were killed, while another 9 were seriously injured. The bang of the collision “froze time”, as the media said at the time. But time did not freeze. The rescued students, as well as their relatives, had to learn to live with these images. All of Greece mourned with them, but it was a tragedy that the human mind could not easily comprehend.
Photos of the crash made it even more horrific. The bus was completely destroyed, with the rescue teams taking two hours to extricate all the students.
The causes of the conflict were analyzed in detail but I was never 100% clear. The driver had been driving for six hours without a break and his tires were not in good condition. On the other hand, the bus was deemed unsuitable due to its age and should have been retired at least 3 months ago.
The trial took place in October 2008, with the bus driver acquitted, but the lorry driver sentenced to 15 years in prison. The owners of the truck and the novopan factory were sentenced to 4 to 14 years. The company also paid the amount of 8,500,000 euros to the families of the victims. As the deputy mayor of Veria said in 2012, “Despite the punishments, despite the compensations, the children of Makrohori will never turn back.”
