French River: The two new railway bridges will be delivered at the end of 2022

by

The two new bridges will replace the existing ones on the Thessaloniki-Florina line.

The progress of its upgrading works railway line “Thessaloniki – Idomeni” as well as the construction of two new railway bridges on the Galliko River, stated the Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, responsible for infrastructure, Mr. Giorgos Karagiannis, in the context of his visit to Thessaloniki.

Mr. Karagiannis, accompanied by its president and managing director WORK, Mr. Christos Vini, initially went to the construction site of “Thessaloniki – Idomeni” where works are progressing to install modern railway systems for its complete modernization.

After the completion of the project, the line will be electrified, increasing the transport capacity of the network.

The contractual construction period is 36 months, while the contractor has the obligation to maintain the works for 36 months from their completion.

Afterwards, the Deputy Minister of Infrastructure visited the construction projects of the two new railway bridges on the bed of the French River. The two new bridges will replace the existing ones on the Thessaloniki-Florina line.

The project will be commissioned at the end of 2022.

In a statement after the meetings at both points, Mr. Karagiannis said:

“We had the opportunity to see up close how two important projects for the railway network of the country and especially Northern Greece “run”. The works on the “Thessaloniki – Idomeni” line have already started for three months and involve interventions that will modernize the railway systems, maximizing safety and offering comfort to travel. The network will be similar to the rest of the European Networks and this will pave the way for international passenger routes that have been almost non-existent for years.

We also got a close look at the work on the French River where they have progressed significantly. We can say with certainty that at the end of 2022 we will have two new railway bridges, on the rise and the descent, on the Thessaloniki – Florina line. We are thus replacing the two existing metal bridges and maximizing transport safety.

These two projects that we had the opportunity to see up close are a part of what is happening in Thessaloniki and more broadly in Northern Greece. The infrastructures are in the foreground and through their modernization the path of development opens for everyone.

Our interventions, especially in the railway, are part of an overall, coherent plan, the largest project program that has been carried out in the country. We thus confirm our clear decision at the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, with Costas Karamanlis, to make the development and improvement of the most environmentally friendly, economic and green means of transport a reality. With political will, proper planning and close supervision, we succeed.”
