Bats: In which parts of the houses are they usually trapped

by

The most common type of bat in Thessaloniki is called the “night bat”. It does not exceed four centimeters. It lives within the urban fabric and feeds exclusively on insects.

The business was set up in minutes for the bat rescue who had been trapped in a closet of a house in the center of Thessaloniki. The owner of the apartment for days heard a strange sound in the bedroom, until he realized that the mammal was on the highest leaf of the wardrobe among blankets and quilts. Then she called her volunteers Rescue Team “Wild Animals and the Greek Care Center” to intervene.

“It is very common for us to be called for a bat rescue. During the spring and summer months, approximately 12 – 15 bat rescue incidents are recorded in Thessaloniki. In the last case it was located in the city center where the young tenant had been hearing strange sounds for several days. He asked us to help him, free the animal and release it back into the environment.” its volunteer said to the radio station of the APE-MPE “Agency 104.9Fm” of the Wild Animal Rescue Team, Stelios Geronymakis.

The most common type of bat found in Thessaloniki is called the “night bat”. It can be considered one of the largest species in Greece, however its body does not exceed four centimeters. It lives within the urban fabric and feeds exclusively on insects.

According to the volunteers of the Wildlife Rescue Group most bats are hidden inside the frames from the shutters, to kitchen vents the toiletin wardrobes and generally dark entrances that exist in houses since the mammals recognize something similar to the caves that are their natural environment.

The rescuers, with careful movements and without injuring the bat, catch it and place it inside a paper box, like that of shoes, to be released a few minutes later.

“Our aim is first to remove the animal from the house. First, for the safety of the animal and then for the safety of the human who may be frightened and have health problems due to his fear or ignorance. Then we do a spot check, see if the animal is injured and if not we release it.” added Mr. Geronymakis.

Snakes lead the way in rescues – followed by chicks

However, during the summer months, calls for help and rescues of wild animals are at the forefront reptilesas it is estimated that the volunteers are called upon to intervene in approximately 50 – 80 incidents with snakes within Thessaloniki.

Immediately after that follow the young birds, the chicks. As they begin to hatch, several of them jump out of the nests and fall to the ground.

“They call us more for reptiles, for snakes, and then for chicks that take their first flights and fall to the ground. But, as soon as the birds fall down, the man of good will picks them up. Usually, what we say as the first goal is to return the animal back to the nest and to its parents.” clarified Mr. Geronymakis.
