An underwater drone will assist in the next few hours in the search operation to locate him 28-year-old tourist from North Macedonia, who has been missing since Saturday afternoon, when, swimming with two friends, swept away by strong sea currentsat Myti beach, in Poseidi, Halkidiki.
Searches remain, so far, fruitless and continue in difficult conditions, as strong winds are currently blowing five Beauforts. According to the information from the Coast Guard, a Coast Guard vessel and two parasailing vessels are participating in the operation, while earlier an aerial helicopter attempted.
The underwater drone is at the disposal of the Volunteer Rescue Team OFKATH and, as the head of the team, Christos Rammos, told APE-MPE, it will be put into operation as soon as the intensity of the winds subsides, while its camera gives an image at a depth of 100 meters and frontally in a length of 30 meters.
The operations manager of the Hellenic Rescue Team, Alexis Liamos, spoke to APE-MPE about the difficulties of the operation, explaining that the very strong sea currents combined with the special meteorological conditions open up the field of investigations very much and this is also proven by where the second survivor.
The assessment that the situation is difficult was expressed by the head of the Association of Friends and Volunteer Health Units, Kassandra Themelis Ierissiotis, explaining that strong winds are blowing in the area, while yesterday’s rescuer informed that his friend did not know how to swim well.
