The American marines were amazed by the quality and prices of the Thracian food and within three days they ran out of rib eyes, steaks, filets and burgers. At the same time they consumed 7,000 eggs

The American presence in Alexandroupolis is strong, with the city transformed into a geostrategic hub for the US and NATO as the giant USS Arlington docked in the city’s harbor, disembarking more than 1,000 marines.

Restaurants were full, shop shelves were empty, while the city’s tattoo studio opened at 9am, according to the SKAI report.

“Even the chickens figured it out”

Giorgos Alavantas, owner of a restaurant in the area, said that even the chickens understood that the town was full. “Even the hens figured it out. Yesterday 1,500 people ate breakfast in Alexandroupolis, where they eat eggs, sausages and bacon for breakfast. Yesterday they needed 6,000-7,000. In other words, we are forcing the hens for tomorrow. We don’t have eggs.”

The American marines were amazed by the quality and prices of the Thracian food and within three days they ran out of rib eyes, steaks, filets and burgers.

On another occasion, another restaurant owner in the area, Vassilis Siklafidis, said “they have gone crazy. They keep telling us that they haven’t eaten nicer meat. They have gone around how many cities and come here and tell us what kind of meat this is. Especially for the local meats, our fillets. And for the prices they see, they say “are you sure”, are you sure it has that price? I say yes. And they find it incredible, excellent and delicious and the value for money for them is very honest.”

For his part, Giorgos Davis, owner of a grill, said “a soldier who came to me to eat quickly because he was in a hurry to get on the ship, we served him and the bill was 8 euros. He paid 8 euros with a card and left 10 dollars at the waiter.”

In fact, some of the American soldiers even wanted to get tattoos and had contacted the local tattoo artist in advance, who was also open on Sunday in order to be able to serve them! The owner of a tattoo studio in Alexandroupoli, Nikos Katsoulis, stated that “a week, about ten days ago, the mails started coming in droves. From 9 in the morning, as if we were an oven, he was outside. We already canceled the case for large tattoos. We told them that we would make small ones, so we also chose, we informed them and they made one small one each. They travel all over the world, so the tattoos are crucial for them to have a memory when they grow up to say that they passed through Greece and I got this tattoo.”
