In Kilkis, the first, worldwide, record of the Allium fightissanum plant

by

This is another sample of the flora richness of the area

Intense colors in the spectrum of brown and red, special characteristics and a height that does not exceed 60 cm, are the main features of a new species of plant, recorded for the first time, worldwide, at the foot of Mount Paikos, in the Kilkis Regional Unit. This is another sample of the area’s floral wealth, which comes from the genus Allium and was “baptized” Allium Goumenissanum.

After the announcement of the new species in the scientific journal Phytotaxa with the scientific name Allium gyumissanum Ioannidis & Tzanoud. sp. nov., and the inclusion in both the Greek and European floral catalogs, the name of Goumenissa “travels” all over the world not only with the PDO wine of “GOUMENISSA” but also with this new type of plant.

The first recordings were made on August 2012 just outside two wineries in the area: that of the late Titos Eftychidis and that of the Tatsis brothers. The robust perennial onion can reach a height of 60 cm, it blooms in autumn and the characteristics of its inflorescence are very long spathes (15-20 cm.) and the many brown-red flowers (50-60).

Kilkis

To date, records are limited to the Kilkis Regional Unit, with records enriched from 2021 with new sites in Megalo Rema (Kotza Dere, just below the village of Pigi) and the archaeological site of Palatianos. It is very likely that further research will also record new positions in Greece. It is the second onion from the region of Kilkis prefecture that enriches the flora wealth of Greece, after the observations of agronomist Vassilis Ioannidis of the Directorate of Agricultural Economy & Veterinary Medicine of the Kilkis Regional Unit and the scientific analysis of Professor Dimitris Tzanoudakis, from the University of Patras, with a very large project and at the European level in the Allium genus.
