No official announcement has been made so far by the authorities in Serbia regarding the Antonov transport aircraft that crashed last Saturday night near Kavala.
Serbian media relay reports from Greek media, mainly from ERT and APE-MPE.
What is certain is that the aircraft took off last night from the airport “Konstantinos the Great” in the city of Nis, in southern Serbia.
According to Serbian media websites, eyewitnesses living near Nis airport reported seeing the aircraft take off last night. Some said they were struck by the fact that it “had a bit of a bumpy ride”. Politika newspaper reports that “the plane belonged to a private American company and was registered in Ukraine.”
According to Serbian media, many questions surround the cargo carried by the aircraft. It is possible that it transported military material: Serbia mainly exports ammunition to various countries in the Middle East.
The Serbian Armed Forces do not have Antonov An-12 transports.
The former Yugoslavia had purchased two An-12s, however one crashed outside Yerevan, Armenia on 12 December 1988, while the second was also sold in 1998 to a private Bulgarian airline.
