The mayor of Pangaiou, Philippos Anastasiadis, reported to SKAI that the aircraft was carrying ammunition.

Teams of army pyrotechnicians are operating this morning in cooperation with the Fire Department at the location where an Antonov type aircraft, which had a crew of eight and was carrying 12 tons of dangerous cargo, crashed last night shortly before 11:00 PM in Kavala.

The mayor of Pangai, Philippos Anastasiadis, reported to SKAI that the aircraft carried ammunition.

At the same time, with the help of unmanned aircraft, the crash site is expected to be inspected, in order to determine whether there is any other flammable material.

The aircraft had taken off from Ukraine. Before the cargo route from Serbia to Jordan, he had visited Turkey.

On the maps it is recorded to make a 180 degree turn, while flying over the sea near Mount Athos in the direction of Chrysoupoli.

However, it did not reach the airport and its signal was lost from the radar, as it went down in flames near the settlement of Paleochori.

Sources close to the Civil Aviation Authority said that the pilot informed that the aircraft had suffered an engine failure and requested permission to make an emergency landing.

“They saw it fall on fire even from Drama,” the chairman of the Municipal Council of the Municipality of Pangaio, Christos Bosbotis, told SKAI.

“The crash caused explosions and there are toxic gases in the atmosphere, which is why the fire brigade issued initial recommendations for the use of masks to the residents of the area, while subsequently calling on them to close the doors and windows of the houses, and not to open the air conditioners .

The crash site has been cordoned off by police.

The pilot, according to the first information, shortly before 11 p.m., had requested permission to make an emergency landing due to a breakdown at the Kavala airport, but he did not manage to get there as a fire broke out in one engine in flight and the four-engine aircraft went down .

According to the report, the aircraft was lost from radar ten miles west of Kavala airport and while it had received permission for an emergency landing, having reported the breakdown.

The aircraft belonged to the Serbian army.

After the plane went down, there were repeated explosions.

Warning to residents

Residents in the local communities of Antifilippi and Paleochori of the municipality of Pangaios were notified to keep doors, windows and air conditioners closed to prevent any contact with the air of the area where the aircraft crashed.
