Five regions of the country remain in category 4
In the 2nd Operational Readiness Stage the Fire Department is on air and ground patrols due to the increased risk of fires tomorrow and Monday, while at this time all the fires that have broken out across Greece have been tackled by the firefighters at their start.
In Rethymnon, the fire has been extinguished, but surveillance is being carried out. In Achaia there is no active front, but pedestrians and vehicles are still around the perimeter extinguishing small outbreaks, while helicopters and Air Tractors continue to wet. Earlier, the fire that broke out in Agia Marina Koropiou was brought under control and ground and air patrols are being carried out.
At the same time, following the order of the General Secretary of Civil Protection, the Planning and Emergency Response Directorate of the General Secretariat of Civil Protection, as the National Contact Point, activated the Copernicus/Emergency Management Service – Mapping (activation code EMSR593) of the European Union.
The purpose of the activation is the production of cartographic products and data for the Melampes area of ​​P.E. Rethymnon, which was affected by a fire that occurred on Friday, July 15, to support the work of the agencies involved in dealing with emergencies and managing the consequences of the phenomenon.
The request was accepted by the European Union and the availability of a series of cartographic data and products resulting from the analysis of satellite images is expected immediately.
The data and maps of the Copernicus Emergency Management Service/Mapping Service will be made available directly by the Planning and Emergency Response Directorate of the General Secretariat of Civil Protection to all involved bodies free of charge for the management of their project.
According to the Fire Hazard Prediction Map issued by the General Secretariat of Civil Protection of the Ministry of Climate Crisis & Civil Protection, for tomorrow, Monday, July 18, 2022, a very high risk of fire (risk category 4) is predicted for the following areas:
- Region of Attica (including the island of Kythira)
- Region of Central Greece (PE Boeotia, PE Evia)
- Peloponnese Region (Corinthia Region, Argolis Region, Laconia Region)
- Region of Crete
- North Aegean Region (Lesvos Region, Chios Region, Samos Region, Ikaria Region)
Therefore, the 2nd stage of operational readiness of the P.S. remains in place. and aerial surveillance patrols will continue, as well as patrols by Fire, Police and Military forces.
Additionally, their staff Fire Services of the above Regional Units remains on partial alert, while all fire services and levels of the P.E. remain on general alert. Achaia and the staff of the Fire Services of the Region of Crete, in order to deal with the increased service demands, which may arise due to a very high risk of fire (risk category 4).
At the same time, for the above areas, the Plan of Civil Protection actions to deal with risks due to forest fires remains in place, according to which, among other things, the implementation of the measure of the preventive ban on vehicle traffic and the stay of excursionists in national forests is foreseen, forests and “vulnerable” areas.
In direct cooperation with the General Secretariat of Civil Protection, all relevant government agencies involved, as well as the Regions and Municipalities of the country, have been informed, so that they are on increased readiness to take measures within their competence.
