A memorial prayer for the repose of the souls of the crew of the fatal Antonov A-12 aircraft, which crashed, late last night, in a rural area between Antiphilippi and Paleochori, near Kavala, was chanted, this morning, after the end of the divine service in holy church of Apostolos Thomas of the local community of Paleochori.
The vicar of the holy church, father Theoharis Kalpakoglou, who has been ministering for 21 years in the area – his place of origin – was himself an eyewitness to the tragic event, which shocked him so much that he decided to sing a memorial prayer for the people who tragically lost.
“They were people of God and as a priest I thought at the end of today’s divine service that we should do a memorial prayer and pray for the souls of these people, whose nationality we did not know, but neither do we care as all people are people of God . We had a sacred duty to say a prayer that God may rest their souls since they are gone and that their relatives may be strengthened in the face of this great pain, which is also our pain“, the vicar of the holy church of Apostolos Thomas, in Paleochori, told APE-MBE.
“It was a prayer as a result of the love that the Church and Christ have for all people“, he emphasized.
“We are shocked because this was unprecedented. We cannot express in words the feelings we had at that moment”, he emphasized and described the moment of the crash: “We were on the balcony of our house and we heard a plane passing by, so we turned our eyes to see it. Shocked we saw a mass of light, a fire, land right below our village and fortunately it was in an uninhabited area. I can’t describe the moment in words,” said the priest, describing the “terrifying image” of the moment the plane went down.
